Kitchens

Domestic range and bathroom exhaust systems:

  • Kitchen exhaust systems shall be constructed of metal with smooth interior surfaces

  • Exhaust ducts must be airtight

  • Exhaust ducts must terminate not less than 3 feet from a property line,10 feet from forced air inlet, and at least 3 feet from any openings into the building such as operable windows, doors, etc

  • Exhaust ducts must be continuous to the outside of the building and must be equipped with backdraft dampers

Household cooking appliances:

  • Household cooking appliances shall have a vertical clearance above the cooking top of not less than 30” to combustible material or metal cabinets

  • A minimum of 24” is permitted where the underside of the combustible material or metal cabinet above the cooking top is protected with not less than 1/4” insulating millboard covered with sheet metal not less than 0.0122” thick

  • A minimum of 24” is permitted where a metal ventilating hook of sheet metal not less than 0.0122” is installed above the cooking top with a clearance of not less than 1/4" between the hood and the underside of the combustible material or metal cabinet, and the hood is as wide as the appliance and is centered over the appliance

  • A minimum of 24” is permitted where a listed cooking appliance or microwave oven installed over a cooking appliance is installed per the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Microwave ovens shall comply with UL 923

Bathrooms

Removing a toilet:

  • Turn off the water

  • Flush the toilet to remove as much of the water as possible from the toilet and basin

  • Remove the water line from the toilet

  • Remove the caps from the toilet base and remove the washers holding the toilet in place

  • lift the toilet up off the wax ring, tipping it away from the tank to minimize trapped water loss

Bathroom accessories and hardware:

  • A water closet, urinal, lavatory or bidet shall not be set closer than 15 inches (381 mm) from its center to any side wall, partition, vanity or other obstruction

  • Towel bars should be hung so the towel hangs about 16″ above a countertop. If  you are hanging bath towels and there is nothing under the towel bar 48″ to 54″ is a good height for the bar

  • For toilet paper holders 24″ is a good height for the holder regardless of toilet height
